Finding Strength Through Fitness: My MindFitness Journey
This story is dedicated to Mr. Imperfect Fitness, the trainer who helped me redefine what fitness meant to me—especially as a woman of color. He pushed me beyond the physical, challenging my mindset and supporting my mission of MindFitness. From the very beginning, this was about finding strength within myself, not just in muscle, but in mentality and meaning.
Rewriting My Youth: Overcoming Early Doubts and Finding Strength
Growing up, my relationship with fitness was complicated. Society tells women—especially women of color—how we should look, how we should move, and what beauty is. I constantly compared myself to others, and that slowly chipped away at my confidence. I admired women who appeared self-assured, but I never truly felt like I belonged among them.
My mom would say, “True beauty shines from the inside out.” While I appreciated her words, they were hard to believe as a chubby, awkward middle-schooler hiding under a hairdryer, trying to fit in while observing the so-called “pretty girls.”
Psychologist Erik Erikson explains the “Industry vs. Inferiority” stage, where we begin comparing ourselves to peers. For me, that comparison centered on appearance. I wasn’t the fastest, the smallest, or the loudest. I was simply in-between—and that feeling lingered for years.
From Confusion to Clarity:Finding Strength
By high school, I entered what Erikson labels the “Identity vs. Role Confusion” stage. I discovered pride in sports like softball and in marching band. My body wasn’t just something to critique anymore—it was strong and capable. That was the first time I felt real pride in myself.
In college, the feeling grew stronger. Walking daily, going to the gym, and expressing myself through fashion reshaped how I viewed my body. My hair, clothes, and confidence aligned into something clear and cohesive. I knew who I was, and I didn’t need external validation anymore.
Guided Growth: Trainers Who Transformed Me
After graduating, I had a realization: I thrive with accountability. I work best when someone guides me, nudges me forward, and helps me stay focused. That structure kept me consistent. Self-accountability is powerful—but for me, connection and coaching made the difference.
I had the honor of training with three different coaches. They taught me goal-setting, mental stamina, and what consistency truly looks like. One of the most powerful lessons? Muscle failure isn’t failure at all—it’s growth. That concept shaped my understanding of MindFitness: progress often hides within what we label as setbacks.
Embracing Imperfection: My Introduction to Imperfect Fitness
Eventually, I found my way to Imperfect Fitness. More than a gym, it’s a mindset—a place where showing up imperfectly is still powerful. After moving to PG, my brother introduced me to the space. From our first consultation, I felt at home.
My trainer knew bodies well but also knew how to challenge the mind. We began with one session per week, prioritizing nutrition first. Then we built upward—adding sessions and maintaining structure. That’s how progress happens: gradually and intentionally.
The Power of Consistency
Consistency is subtle but mighty. It doesn’t demand recognition. Like water shaping rock, its power lies in repetition. Whether it’s the fall/winter slump or holiday distractions, I kept moving. And when spring arrived, I didn’t have to “start over”—because I never stopped.
This journey became about more than fitness. It shaped my lifestyle, mindset, and habits. Yes, my body changed. But so did my sense of purpose.

Self-Care and Support: Expanding the Definition of Strength
Today, fitness is a non-negotiable part of who I am. I attend 3–4 classes weekly and have added softer, restorative practices: massage, journaling, prayer, and meditation. Fitness is no longer something I do—it’s part of how I live.
And community? That’s the key. The people I’ve connected with through Imperfect Fitness and beyond continue to fuel my commitment. Their stories, energy, and presence keep me grounded.
Final Reflections on Finding Strength
To Mr. Imperfect Fitness and the trainers who stood by me—thank you. You showed me a version of myself I never imagined. I no longer compare myself to others. I’m connected to my own internal strength now. You didn’t just shape my body—you trained my mind.
Here’s to the imperfect path, and to showing up exactly as we are.
