Engaging Seniors During COVID: Real Stories from the Community
What does engaging seniors during COVID really look like on the ground? One of our M.O.T.M.V. members, a compassionate Lyft driver, shared their inspiring experience while working with elderly passengers during the pandemic. Their story is a testament to empathy in motion.
Engaging Seniors During COVID Through Ride-Share Services
Our member frequently drives for Lyft and picks up seniors from nursing homes, hospitals, libraries, and grocery stores. Every trip brings a unique challenge—especially during the era of COVID-19. When distancing guidelines recommended a strict six feet of space, helping an elderly person who could barely walk posed a moral dilemma. Do you let them struggle, or step in to help despite the health risks?
Engaging Seniors During COVID: Head Versus Heart
The situation brings us to a powerful reflection on the difference between the brain and the mind. According to ResearchGate:
“The brain is an organ, but the mind isn’t. The brain is the physical place where the mind resides… the mind is the manifestation of thought, perception, emotion, memory, and imagination.”
In this scenario, the brain may say, “Follow the rules.” But the mind reasons, empathizes, and ultimately chooses compassion. Our member chose empathy—helping seniors into the car, escorting them from doorways, and even physically lifting them when needed.
The Need for More Community-Based Engagement
As we continue engaging seniors during COVID, these quiet acts of service matter. You don’t need to be a healthcare provider to make a difference—sometimes it’s the Lyft driver who becomes the unsung hero. And while we don’t encourage you to take unnecessary risks, we honor those who courageously balance caution with compassion.
